Nearly 12 months on from its last round of layoffs, Warner Bros Discovery is initiating another round of cuts.Deadline understands the company is set to lay off employees on the cable television side of its business. It is believed to be in the double digits but well under 100 as it looks for more efficiencies. These cuts will largely impact the Discovery side of the company, which runs cable networks including the Discovery Channel, Investigation Discovery, TLC and others. This comes as the global linear networks division saw operating profit fall 14% to $1.8 billion with revenue down 6% to $4.8B in its first-quarter financial results unveiled last month. All of this follows a move by Warner Bros Discovery CEO David Zaslav to reorganize the company into two operating divisions – Global Linear Networks and Studios & Streaming. He said that the move means it “can move quickly if we decide to change and make a determination on restructuring.” However, S&P downgraded the company to “junk status” on “weak credit metrics” and called such a separation “credit negative.”This is precisely what NBCUniversal owner Comcast did by splitting off its cable networks from the rest of the company into a standalone public company called Versant, which led to another round of layoffs.Earlier this month, Deadline revealed that Disney laid off several hundred employees globally across its film and television businesses. The reorganization of Warner Bros Discovery’s linear cable networks follows the move to hand oversight of the division to Channing Dungey, who is now Chairman and CEO, Warner Bros. Television Group and U.S. Networks, following the retirement of Kathleen Finch last year. Dungey moved quickly to promote Brett Paul and Howard Lee to new roles; Paul, who is President of Warner Bros Television is also now COO for U.S. Networks, while Lee is Chief Creative Officer of U.S. Networks in addition to his previous role overseeing TLC and Discovery Channel. The U.S. Networks leadership team also includes Susan Kolar as Chief Financial & Strategy Officer, reporting to Warner Bros Discovery CFO Gunnar Wiedenfels, and Karen Bronzo, who is Chief Global Marketing Officer for U.S. Networks & News.
