C21 News: Netflix reaches four-year agreement with Create Denmark resolving rights conflict

Story from C21 News:

Netflix has entered into a new four-year rights agreement for scripted series with Create Denmark following the 2022 row that halted Danish TV and film production at Netflix and other streamers.

Neither Create Denmark, which represents local film directors and other players, nor Netflix revealed details of the pact but both said they were happy with it.

“We appreciate the constructive collaboration with Netflix. The new agreement shows that Netflix values original scripted Danish series. We are pleased that there is a basis for continued investment,” said Kasper Halkier, director of Create Denmark.

Rachel C Schumacher, senior director of international labour relations at Netflix, described the deal as a testament to the trust between the parties and said it strengthens the streamer’s partnership with unions, talent and the local production ecosystem.

In 2022, Netflix, TV 2 Play and Viaplay halted the production of new fiction series and films in Denmark after Create Denmark established a new joint rights agreement that bypassed the streaming services.

The conflict led to Create Denmark abandoning the existing comprehensive rights agreement and instead making individual deals with each service. Temporary ones were reached withViaplay and Netflix, among others, at the end of 2022.

Netflix’s new fixed four-year pact with Danish rights holders ensures the production of local series can continue uninterrupted until at least May 2029. A rights agreement for Danish feature films is not yet in place but the parties are working on one.
