Broadband TV News; LFP: Canal’s role restricted to that of distributor

Story from Broadband TV News:

The role of Canal+ in the broadcast of French top flight football looks like being restricted to that of a distributor, according to RMC Sport.

The pay-TV platform had hoped to partner with LFP to mangage the new Ligue 1 channel. Instead, reports the sports broadcaster, it will be a simple distributor on the same level as IPTV platforms, Amazon and DAZN.

It’s thought that the amount being sought by Canal for its services were in excess of what the LFP were willing to pay. DAZN, the previous rights holder that had proposed to handle production, editorial, marketing and communication needs for €110 million over two year, has also been frozen out.

This leaves BeIN Sports, who will remain as the rights holder for the Saturday 17.00 CET match.

It’s anticipated eight out of the nine games played each matchday would appear on the new channel.
