Deadline: Lionsgate Television Undergoes Round Of Layoffs

Story from Deadline:

There has been more belt-tightening at indie studio Lionsgate Television. Five people in the scripted television group were laid off Thursday, which represents 6% of the company’s workforce of about 80, sources said.

The cuts follow a similar move on the unscripted side, with around 5% of Lionsgate Alternative Television laid off in November amid an ongoing contraction in the TV business that has hit independent suppliers particularly hard.

It also comes on the eve of next month’s split between Lionsgate and premium network Starz, for which Lionsgate TV has served as in-house studio.

In addition to Starz’s Power franchise and BMF, Lionsgate Television’s portfolio includes CBS’ Ghosts — which was just renewed for two seasons by CBS — Apple TV+’s Acapulco and upcoming Seth Rogen comedy The Studio, as well as two series inherited from the eOne acquisition: ABC’s The Rookie and Showtime’s Yellowjackets. Another former eOne series, The Recruit, was just canceled by Netflix after two seasons.

In December 2023, Lionsgate laid off around 10% of eOne’s workforce ahead of closing the $375M merger and in September of last year offered U.S. employees a voluntary severance and early retirement program “amid “disrupted business environment”.

Following the eOne acquisition, Lionsgate Television also reduced the number of the combined producing deals by 70% last year.
