Deadline; ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ Trailer: Marvel Drops Long-Awaited Preview During Super Bowl

Story from Deadline:

At long last, Marvel Studios has unveiled the first trailer for Deadpool & Wolverine, the superhero flick promising a team-up between Ryan Reynolds’ Merc with a Mouth and Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine, which is slated to hit theaters on July 26, having been delayed a couple of months by last year’s double strikes.

While details as to the plot of the film have thus far been under wraps, director Shawn Levy told Deadline at last year’s Toronto Film Festival that the goal was for the film to feel “grounded” and “real” — more like “a descendant of Midnight Run, and 48 Hours, and Planes, Trains and Automobiles” than “a descendant of Airplane.”

In a recent appearance on BroBible’s Post-Credit podcast, Matthew Vaughn, the filmmaker behind Marvel titles like X-Men: First Class, revealed that he’s seen snippets of the film that are “unbelievable.” Added the helmer of Apple’s spy comedy Argylle, currently in theaters, “That’s going to be the jolt… the Marvel universe is about to have a jolt of them and it’s going to bring that body back to life… I think Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman are about to save the whole Marvel universe.”

Co-written by Rhett Reese, Paul Wernick, Zeb Wells, Reynolds and Levy, Deadpool 3 is produced by Levy, Reynolds and Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige. Other cast members making a return to the MCU in the threequel include Morena Baccarin as Deadpool’s fiancée, Vanessa; Brianna Hildebrand as mutant Negasonic Teenage Warhead; Jennifer Garner as Elektra; Leslie Uggams as Blind Al; Karan Soni as taxi driver Dopinder; Stefan Kapicic as Colossus; Shioli Kutsuna as Negasonic’s girlfriend, Yukio; and Rob Delaney as X-Force member Peter.

Newcomers to the cast of the Deadpool franchise will include The Crown‘s Emma Corrin and Succession‘s Matthew Macfadyen.

Roughly half of the Deadpool threequel was shot prior to the writers’ and actors’ strikes of last summer, with production being completed upon their resolution, between November and January. Other titles quick to head back into production in the aftermath of the labor actions included Warner Bros’ Beetlejuice 2, Paramount’s Gladiator 2, Sony’s Venom 3 and Warner’s Juror No. 2.

Reynolds took a photo of himself next to a big-screen TV showing the ad during the Super Bowl. In his typical deadpan style, he asked his fans, “Has everyone seen the #Deadpool trailer? Also has anyone seen my wife?”

Raynolds’ wife, Blake Lively, was of course a fixture on the Super Bowl telecast, following the game in a stadium box alongside her friend, Taylor Swift.
