RTÉ News: Doireann Garrihy to leave RTÉ 2FM after five years

Story from RTÉ News:

Doireann Garrihy has announced she will leave RTÉ 2FM after five years, saying she wants to "pursue the projects I've been dreaming about".

In a statement released this morning, the 2FM Breakfast presenter said that she was "so glad" that the head of RTÉ 2FM, Dan Healy, "took a chance" on her in 2019, but said it was now "time for ventures new".

The presenter, who also co-hosts RTÉ's Dancing with the Stars with Jennifer Zamparelli, paid tribute to her 2FM Breakfast colleagues Donncha O'Callaghan and Carl Mullan as she announced her decision to leave.

The trio have also fronted RTÉ's The Full Irish Hidden Camera Show.

She said: "Donncha and Carl, I have found brothers for life in you both. What an absolute blast of craic, ridiculous immaturity and lifelong bond building.

"Anyone would be blessed to work with one gentleman every day, I was beyond blessed to work with two."

The 31-year-old broadcaster also expressed her gratitude to 2FM's listeners, saying: "To the loyal 2FM listeners, through thick and thin you've been there. Your support has meant everything.

"There wasn’t a day I didn’t hop out of the bed at 5am. Thank you for welcoming me with open ears back in 2019 and every day since."

Garrihy also revealed her plans for the future: "Now, it’s time for my podcasts Doireann and Friends and The Laughs Of Your Life, to travel, to give more to the people who have been on this journey with me since the viral impressions video of 2016 and to pursue the projects I’ve been dreaming about.

Head of RTÉ 2FM, Dan Healy said: "Doireann is an exceptional broadcaster and has been a very important part of team at 2FM. Everyone in the station is sorry to hear that she has decided to leave. I am very proud of the breakfast show that Doireann presented with Donncha and Carl which has been loved by the audience and very successful in the JNLRs.

"Personally, I'm sorry to see her leave, but I respect Doireann's decision. I wish her the very best for the future in everything she does. Doireann leaves 2FM in good shape and we look forward to building on the success of the breakfast show over the summer months and beyond."

Garrihy's Dancing with the Stars co-presenter Jennifer Zamparelli was among those who responded to her news on social media, saying it was "the end of an era".

She commented on Instagram: "Well done on a great run on the breakfast show! Now go and have a lil snooze for yourself, you deserve it."

2FM presenter Emma Power wrote "You'll be so missed friend", and added: "Looking forward to seeing what the next chapter brings for you."

Meanwhile, 2FM Breakfast star Carl Mullan paid tribute to his co-host Garrihy in a post to Instagram, saying it's been "a genuine privilege" to work alongside her.

He wrote: "For now, all I’ll say is that getting to wake up every morning to work (and laugh endlessly) with the most incredible team mate and friend has been a genuine privilege. We love ya Swan."

Garrihy's fiancé, the comedian, podcast host and writer Mark Mehigan, posted to his Instagram story: "I am so proud of her and so excited for what's next."

The couple are tying the knot at the end of this year in Ireland after getting engaged last November.

Garrihy will present her final 2FM Breakfast with Doireann, Donncha and Carl on RTÉ 2FM on Friday 31 May.
