Previously viewers who were not VodafoneZiggo customers were able to view UEFA’s club football competitions available if they created an account, which required them to share their personal data with the operator. It has now been announced viewers will be able to watch the matches through an open web link. The change follows a conversation between VodafoneZiggo and the Dutch Commissariaat Voor de Media. The regulator has previously expressed concerns over the accessibility of the telecasts, particularly among less internet-savvy groups, such as the elderly. After an investigation, the Commissariat informed VodafoneZiggo that the requirement to create an account to be able to see the competition did not comply with the rules of the Media Act.VodafoneZiggo acquired the broadcasting rights for the UEFA leagues for the Netherlands from the 2024/2025 season. The Champions League and Europa League are (partially) part of the so-called event list. Events on the event list are of general social interest and must be available to at least 75% of Dutch households, without having to pay extra.
