Broadband TV News: Televisión de Galicia pioneers Ultra High Definition broadcasting in Spain

Story from Broadband TV News:

Televisión de Galicia has made history by becoming the first regional channel in Spain to broadcast in Ultra High Definition (UHD) through Digital Terrestrial Television (DTT).

The new UHD signal offers viewers 4K resolution, high dynamic range (HDR) with HLG curve, and an extended colour space (WCG) in line with the ITU-R BT.2020 standard. This combination provides higher contrast, increased sharpness, and a richer colour depth of 10 bits. Additionally, Televisión de Galicia has implemented a progressive high frame rate (HFR) of 50 frames per second, enhancing the overall viewing experience.

In collaboration with their network operator, Televisión de Galicia has installed advanced scaling and encoding devices to ensure the UHD signal’s quality. The first phase of the UHD transition project has already been completed, with the launch of the main UHD simulcast channel on DTT. The second phase aims to record and reproduce native UHD content, both recorded and live events, and distribute them through the on-demand digital content platform AGalega.gal.

As a member of the Federation of Autonomous Radio and Television Organizations (FORTA) and a partner of UHD Spain, the Galician Radio and Television Corporation (CRTVG) is committed to technological evolution and innovation. This advancement reinforces their profile at the technological forefront and reiterates their dedication to providing Galician citizens with a higher quality service.

The launch of Televisión de Galicia’s main channel in UHD is a testament to CRTVG’s commitment to technical innovation in audiovisual services. The transition to UHD was made possible by the optimisation of the multiplex bandwidth following the definitive switch-off date of SD channels in DTT, scheduled for February 2024 in the National Technical Plan for DTT.

Televisión de Galicia’s UHD signal is compatible with all TV sets configured with 4K and HDR, identified by the “UHD” logo. This development is expected to enhance the viewing experience for Galician citizens and potentially increase audience numbers and change consumption habits.

The adoption of UHD broadcasting in Spain has been boosted by the new National Technical Plan for the implementation of UHD in DTT, published in March 2025. While the technical process of broadcasting UHD signals through DTT is relatively simple, the adoption of production standards for UHD content throughout the entire production chain will require more complex projects in terms of timing, costs, and other aspects.
