Brendan Carr, chair of President Donald Trump’s Federal Communications Commission, is speaking out about CBS’ cancellation of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.Carr wrote on X, “The partisan left’s ritualist wailing and gnashing of teeth over Colbert is quite revealing. They’re acting like they’re losing a loyal DNC spokesperson that was entitled to an exemption from the laws of economics.”He added in subsequent posts that he was “shocked that CBS didn’t find it profitable to keep running this type of stuff.”Carr’s comments come after a wild night on late-night television, which saw Colbert deliver the aforementioned rebuke to the Commander-in-Chief, while similar words were used by his old friend Jon Stewart on The Daily Show, who made his thoughts on the situation known in song.Stewart was one of a number of late-night hosts to turn up to the Ed Sullivan Theater on Monday to support their pal with a musical comedy segment from Lin-Manuel Miranda and Weird Al Yankovic. Others included Jimmy Fallon, Seth Meyers, John Oliver and Andy Cohen as well as the likes of Anderson Cooper and Adam Sandler. It all comes as CBS defends its decision as “purely financial” and unconnected to the fact that days before he was axed, Colbert called his parent company Paramount’s decision to settle its lawsuit with President Trump a “big fat bribe.”Carr met Skydance CEO David Ellison last week to discuss the pending regulatory decision on the company’s merger with Paramount Global.According to a filing with the FCC, Ellison and his legal counsel, Matthew A. Brill, met last Tuesday with the FCC officials, and they “discussed Skydance’s commitment to unbiased journalism and its embrace of diverse viewpoints, principles that will ensure CBS’s editorial decision-making reflects the varied ideological perspectives of American viewers.”
