Broadband TV News: Canal+ drops wholesale subscribers

Story from Broadband TV News:

Canal+ says it is treating the maintenance of its direct-to-consumer subscriber bases as a “priority”, while adopting a more “selective approach” on wholesale distribution.

The French pay-TV platform has recorded a 353,000 net decrease in wholesale subscribers over the last 12 months, while its D2C base grew by 0.2%.

It says it continues to benefit from high customer loyalty and a successful new customer, despite the loss of Disney and Ligue 1 football from the platform. Overall, Canal+’s total subscriber base declined by 323,000, bringing the total subscriber base to 25.7 million as of 30 June 2025.

Announcing its first half results, Canal reported group revenues of €3,086 million.

Maxime Saada, Chief Executive Officer of CANAL+, said: “Our strategy of bringing our in-house content together with content from the world’s best studios, sports competitions and streaming platforms, and super-aggregating it all on our enhanced CANAL+ App for the benefit of our customers, provides us with a unique value proposition. We are now taking super-aggregation beyond Europe by extending our historic partnership with Netflix to 24 French-speaking African countries, the first deal of its kind on the continent.”

Canal has confirmed its 2025 performance and results to be on track, with a higher than initially expected cash level.
