Both US legislative Houses (Representatives and Congress) have confirmed the ending of federal funding for National Public Radio (NPR) and Public Broadcasting (PBS). The end of funding for the Corporation for Public Broadcasting is effective immediately following Donald Trump’s signing of the Bill. The decision ends about $1.1 billion (€946m) of funding to support these two much appreciated institutions. In a statement, PBS president and CEO Paula Kerger warned that the cuts will be felt across the country. “These cuts will significantly impact all of our stations, but will be especially devastating to smaller stations and those serving large rural areas,” she stated. “Many of our stations which provide access to free unique local programming and emergency alerts will now be forced to make hard decisions in the weeks and months ahead.”The cuts represent two years of funding which had already been voted and allocated. The two broadcasters were seen – by critics – as being too liberal, or left-leaning. Fans, however, cited the local programming supplied by NPR and the niche entertainment provided by PBS included Science & Nature, Democracy in action and Kids material. The PBS nightly news hour is a popular source of non-network coverage.PBS immediately started one of its fund-raising efforts in an attempt to raise cash with the message “defunded but not defeated” and “Your support is essential. Help keep your local PBS station strong”.
