Star India has filed a Statement of Case in its ongoing arbitration against ZEE, seeking damages of $940 million (approximately Rs 7,869 crore) following the termination of their ICC TV rights deal. The dispute centres around a deal made in August 2022, in which ZEE had agreed to sub-licence the ICC TV rights from Star until 2027. However, ZEE withdrew from the $1.4 billion deal after failing to make the first payment of $200 million. The Economic Times reports that in its legal filing, Star claims significant financial losses due to ZEE’s non-compliance with the terms of the agreement, resulting in the termination of the sub-licensing deal. The damages sought reflect the impact of Zee’s withdrawal on Star’s overall investment and contractual obligations related to the ICC TV rights. However, ZEE has strongly denied all allegations made by Star and is prepared to contest the claims in arbitration. The company asserts that the proceedings are still in their early stages and has vowed to “strongly contest all unfounded claims.” ZEE further stated that it “reserves all rights” and is determined to defend its position on merit.ZEE’s withdrawal from the agreement has become a significant legal and financial battle between the two media giants.
