The executive chair of Coimisiún na Meán has said its review of the broadcasting moratorium will be concluded in time for the next election.Jeremy Godfrey told the Oireachtas Media Committee that research showed that broadcasters "hate" the moratorium and very much want to see it gone. However, he said the input from the public was more mixed.Mr Godfrey said the Commission is looking at "the balance between dealing with the problem of disinformation being amplified by it being broadcast during the moratorium period versus the advantage of allowing trusted journalists online to debunk disinformation".He was responding to Sinn Féin TD Imelda Munster, who asked for an update on the review.Currently, television and radio broadcasters cannot report on elections or referendums from 2pm on the day before the polls open until after they are closed. The rule does not apply to online or social media. The regulator confirmed two months ago that it was to review the rules around moratoriums on radio and television broadcasts during elections. It said it would undertake the review following a "clear" call from stakeholders for it to be removed in recent years.
