The Council for Electronic Media (VEM) has issued fines of €100,000 to two of the country’s leading broadcasters.Nova TV and RTL Hrvatska failed to meet quotas of 2.5% of total annual gross income for content produced by independent producers in Croatia.The Croatian media regulator also issued a direct fine to senior management amounting to another €6,630. The stations have been ordered to invest the shortfall in 2024.Croatia’s Law on Electronic Media required broadcasters in 2023 to ensure at least 2.5% of theor annual gross income generated by the provision of media services is invested in work by Croatian independent producers. From this year the requirement is being increased to 5%.The rules apply only to larger, national broadcasters, and not local stations.In Croatia, the RTL brand is owned and operated by Central European Media Enterprises. The company owned Nova TV in the country, until it was sold to Direct Media in 2018.
