Broadband TV News: LFP puts forward plans for inhouse channel

Story from Broadband TV News:

The French football league has set out plans for its planned dedicated channel to the heads of the country’s leading clubs.

The proposals from the LFP came after the body struggled to find a bidder to cover the five-year cycle from 2024 through to the end of the 2028-29 season.

According to L’Équipe, the so-called ‘Plan B’ is for a non-exclusive channel that would be available to the country’s distribution platforms.

Operators would receive a percentage of each €25 subscription sold, rather than a single fee for carriage.

Amazon was the most recent principal rightsholder, picking up after the collapse of the Mediapro deal, and infuriating Canal Plus after it emerged it had paid more than the parcels to entertainment company for just three matches a week.

Its emerged the LFP has already secured technical facilities including a control room.

The plans have the support of CVC, the investment fund that has injected €1.5 billion in to the LFP in return for 13% of commercial revenues.

The original plan for a channel produced by beIN Sports, but distributed by Canal is at a standstill, though there is hope for a separate offer from either beIN Sports or DAZN.
