Deadline: ‘The Terror’ Returning To AMC For Third Installment After Five-Year Break

Story from Deadline:

The Terror, one of AMC’s hit franchises, is returning to the network more than five years after its last season.

The network has ordered The Terror: Devil in Silver as the third installment in the anthology series. It comes after Season 2 – The Terror: Infamy – premiered in 2019.

The six-part series premiering in 2025 is based on The Devil in Silver, a novel written by Victor LaValle. He is writing the new iteration alongside Chris Cantwell, who who was showrunner on AMC’s 2014-17 drama Halt and Catch Fire.

Back in 2020, then AMC boss Sarah Barnett told Deadline that it was interested in a third run and was eyeing topics for development.

The Terror: Devil in Silver tells the story of Pepper, a working-class moving man who, through a combination of bad luck and a bad temper, finds himself wrongfully committed to New Hyde Psychiatric Hospital – an institution filled with the people society would rather forget. There, he must contend with patients who work against him, doctors who harbor grim secrets and perhaps even the very devil himself. As Pepper navigates a hellscape where nothing is as it seems, he finds that the only path to freedom is to face down the entity that thrives on the suffering within New Hyde’s walls. But doing so might prove that the worst demons of all live inside him.

The book was published in 2013.

Karyn Kusama, who directed Jennifer’s Body and episodes of Yellowjackets, will direct the first two episodes and will exec produce alongside Cantwell, LaValle, Scott Free’s David Zucker, Emjag’s Alexandra Milchan, Management 360’s Guymon Casady and Anjulia Productions’ Scott Lambert.

The first season of the drama, which was based on Dan Simmons’ novel and aired in 2018, was set on the frigid decks of a Victorian Era sailing ship following a doomed course. Season 2, titled The Terror: Infamy, centers on a malevolent, shape-shifting force that is locked up with prisoners in a Japanese internment camp.

The first season, which is a fictionalized account of Captain Sir John Frankin’s lost expedition to the Arctic from 1845-48, was developed by David Kaiganich, while the second season was created by Alexander Woo and Max Borenstein.

“The Terror anthology series has already delivered to fans two unforgettable seasons of storytelling that blend real-world events and characters with a terrifying and mysterious supernatural element,” said Dan McDermott, president of entertainment and AMC Studios for AMC Networks. “The Devil in Silver offers a perfect opportunity for a new installment of this popular and critically acclaimed anthology. We are looking forward to once again working with Chris Cantwell, who we partnered with so successfully on Halt and Catch Fire, Victor LaValle, Karyn Kusama and this great producing team to share our version of Victor’s heralded and disturbing novel.”
