BBC: Paul Royall appointed as Executive News Editor of the BBC News Channel

Story from BBC:

Paul Royall has been appointed as the Executive News Editor of the BBC News Channel on a permanent basis.

Paul was previously interim Executive News Editor – leading BBC News Channel’s single operation through the successful launch last year, and consistently delivering breaking news and public service journalism to audiences in the UK and across the world.

BBC News remains the most-watched news channel in the UK, and has a weekly audience of over 100m around the rest of the world. The single-news operation splits into a UK and international feed and joins up with important global news developments to offer audiences the very best of BBC journalism.

Under Paul’s leadership, the channel has produced outstanding coverage on significant stories such as Prigozhin’s march on Moscow, the Lucy Letby trial and the outbreak of war in the Middle East – significantly boosting audiences in recent months.

The BBC News Channel has added choices for audiences through single-story streaming, and established the channel’s Washington DC operation for increased round-the-clock expertise. The channel now sits as part of BBC News’ digital offering on our live pages and can be found on the BBC app and website, and on BBC iPlayer.

Prior to his role at the BBC News Channel, Paul edited the BBC News at Ten, Six and One, and has spent many years at the forefront of BBC News programmes covering major news events including three General Elections, the Scottish and EU Referendums, a global pandemic, the wars in Ukraine and Gaza/Israel and the death of the Queen. Just before Paul left BBC News at Ten it won RTS news programme of year, and was Bafta nominated.

Paul Royall says: "I am delighted to be leading the BBC News Channel on a permanent basis. This is a hugely talented team and I’m excited by everything we can achieve for audiences going forward. 2024 will be another momentous year of news, and it will be a privilege to be at heart of if for the channel."

Naja Nielsen, Digital Director, BBC News says: "Paul is an inspiring and brilliant news leader with a very strong editorial compass. The news channel has successfully undergone the biggest reform in its life. The channel has gone from strength to strength over the past year, with an offer that is more live, has more depth and sits at the very heart of BBC News, working closely with our specialist units and digital teams.
