Broadband TV News: Eurosport-Canal+ carriage agreement ends

Story from Broadband TV News:

Canal+ subscribers in France face the prospect of losing Eurosport after the carriage agreement between the two partners expired without a new settlement in place.

Canal had warned subscribers that the Warner Bros Discovery owned channel could disappear after 14 November, but it’s understood the channel remains on-air.

Long-time readers of Broadband TV News will be aware this is not the first time Warner Bros Discovery has been involved in a carriage dispute, but this time comes with the move towards direct-to-consumer distribution through Max, which made its debut in the French market in June.

Max brings together content from HBO – like Sky in the UK, Canal had an output deal with the premium channel – Discovery and Eurosport.

However, the Eurosport and Max contracts remain separate from each other.

Max is available in certain Canal+ packages, but otherwise requires €5.99 per month for the with ads tier and €10.99 with the Max Sports option.

Le Parisien reports that “discussions with Canal+ are continuing to find a fair agreement”.

Earlier this month, it emerged that Canal, which launched Disney+ in the French market, is to lose the streaming service from 1 January 2025.
