Advanced Television; France: Netflix key contributor to film production

Story from Advanced Television:

French cinema production broke records in 2024, reaching a total of 309 movies funded by public body CNC, representing a total investment of €1.44 billion, and the platforms have kept growing in the movie industry.

Reflecting a year marked by increased investment by national linear broadcasters, the share of the SVoD platforms jumped to record highs in 2024, according to the CNC’s annual film production review.

SVoD streamers financed 45 French-originated movies in 2024, compared with 39 in 2023 and 17 in 2022.

Their investment rose by 59 per cent to a total of €76 million, representing an average contribution up by 37.9 per cent to €1.7 million. Most of the movies concerned were co-financed with other broadcasters and their average budget reached €9.52 million. This shows the dominant streamers’ appetite for big budget movies. Only 14 films ranked between €1 million and €4 million budgets.

Netflix remained the most active platform, bringing 81 per cent of the total contribution across 27 films including Family Pack, versus ten for Disney+, six for Prime Video and two for Max.
