Broadband TV News: GAA opens championship games to domestic broadcasters

Story from Broadband TV News:

The GAA has invited “expressions of interest” for broadcast rights to selected championship games currently broadcast by GAAGo.

It opens up the possibility of bids from Virgin Media TV and TG4.

The move follows advice from the Competition and Consumer Protection Commission after an investigation of GAAGo, the joint venture between public broadcaster RTE and the GAA itself.

The matches had previously been a part of a package held by Sky Sports for nine years until the end of 2022.

Sky had initially wanted a new contract, but an agreement couldn’t be reached. GAAGo was awarded an expanded package for 38 games compared to the 14 exclusive live games taken by Sky. The All-Ireland semi-finals and final were simulcast with RTE.

There is no change to RTE’s 31-game package.
