Broadband TV News: Axel Springer to close BILD TV channel

Story from Broadband TV News:

German media company Axel Springer will shut down linear TV channel BILD on December 31, 2023.

The broadcasting licence will be returned, according to Springer. From 2024, the video offering of tabloid newspaper BILD will focus on BILD’s own digital platforms.

With the closure, Springer reacts to the weak viewer figures for the channel, which originally launched as a news channel with a high proportion of live programmes, but recently mainly showed documentaries.

The live matches of the handball and basketball leagues in cooperation with sports streaming service Dyn as well as BILD formats such as discussion rounds will be shown on Springer’s linear news channel WELT TV from 2024 – in addition to distribution on the digital BILD platforms. BILD will continue to show its original productions on TV apps and streaming platforms with FAST Channels.

“The games from Dyn and the sports programmes from our BILD colleagues are a great addition to our line-up. Sport is particularly popular with viewers on Sunday afternoons and therefore fits perfectly into our strategy, in which we are increasingly focussing on live formats,” said Frank Hoffmann, TV Managing Director of WELT.
