Broadband TV News: Finland to switch off SD broadcasts next Spring

Story from Broadband TV News:

Finland’s communications regulator has announced plans to switch off the country’s standard definition transmissions.

Traficom says the rules will apply to both terrestrial and cable TV broadcasts.

Public Broadcaster YLE has already confirmed its move to the HD format, though the commercial sector has yet to confirm its plans.

“The transition brings better quality television picture and sound to all households, when the antenna television network switches to using only the newer DVB-T2 transmission technology and the transmissions of the older DVB-T technology are stopped,” explains manager Suvi Juurakko-Lehikoinen. “Newer broadcasting technology utilizes the limited frequencies intended for TV use more efficiently, which enables a wider HD offer than at present,” continues Juurakko-Lehikoinen.

Traficom will be co-ordinating the process with the TV industry, network operators, industry associations and consumer groups.

“The HD transition is part of technological development that also supports media diversity and vitality,” says Traficom CEO Jarkko Saarimäki. “For us at Traficom, it is important that the entire population stays involved in technological development. Our goal is that after the transition, all homes will be ready to receive HD broadcasts. We encourage you to check not only your own television, but the televisions of loved ones, especially the elderly, so that the television can be seen in the future,” emphasizes Saarimäki.

A promotional campaign kicks off later this year.
