Broadband TV News: Amazon sublicenses Premier League games from Viaplay

Story from Broadband TV News:

Viaplay has reached an agreement with Amazon Prime Video to offload 10% of all Premier League games each season in Sweden and Denmark.

Under the deal, Prime Video subscribers will see 38 games each season including the Saturday 12.30 GMT kick-off.

“We have made an overall assessment that it is the right way to go for us. We are always open to partnerships that give us the best return on our investments”, says Christian Albeck, acting CEO of Viaplay Group in Swede, in an interview with Sportbladet.

The deal is for the next four seasons and will be included in the Prime Video subscription at no extra cost with local commentary also available.

It’s the latest move from the under pressure streaming company, which last month agreed to licence some of its Viaplay Originals to the parcels-to-entertainment company.

“The entire industry is currently undergoing a hot bath. We have done a lot of work in recent months to get back on track and we are well on the way forward,” said Albeck.

In February, Viaplay completed a refinancing, raising SEK 4 billion in new share issues.
