German public broadcaster ARD will cease the SD distribution of its TV channels across all transmission infrastructures on January 7, 2025.ARD confirmed this in a press release, pointing out that only a few households in Germany still receive the channels in the lower SD resolution while HD reception has become almost universal. The broadcaster adds that it can save distribution costs with the move.ARD recently confirmed that it intends to terminate SD distribution in early 2025. On November 15, 2022, ARD commenced SD switch-off on Astra (19.2° East): ARTE, Phoenix, tagesschau24 and One can since then only be received in HD quality via satellite.
