Daily Mail: Conor McGregor teases 'inevitable' WWE future

Story from Daily Mail:

Conor McGregor has hinted at an 'inevitable' future in professional wrestling with a cheeky social media post - despite previously labelling fans of the sport 'dweebs'.

'The Notorious', 34, is a former two-weight UFC champion and is one of the most high-profile athletes in the sport.

He has not fought since July 2021 due to an injury sustained in his loss against Dustin Poirier but despite three losses in his last four bouts is apparently keen to become a double champ again.

Sportsmail reported on Monday afternoon that WWE's sale to Endeavor Group - which also owns UFC - was confirmed, with the company valued at a giant £7.53billion.

The two organisations will now merge in a sensational takeover which could have implications for McGregor's future.

On his Twitter page, Irish McGregor posted a mocked-up picture of himself holding both a UFC belt - and a championship title belt from world-leading wrestling promotion company WWE.

Despite previously brutally mocking wrestling star John Cena and the sport in general, McGregor (22-6) tweeted the image with an emoji of the Republic of Ireland and American flags and the caption: '@wwe, @ufc, @TheMacLife #itsinevitable'.

McGregor previously said in an interview: 'What's the main guy? John Cena. He's 40, walking around in a luminous orange t-shirt and a headband talking about 'nobody can see him'.

'We can see him right there. He's a big fat 40-year-old failed Mr Olympian. Do you know what I mean? They're dweebs, these guys.'

If the purchase goes through, McGregor would be an extremely high-profile addition. Celebrity YouTuber-turned-wrestler Logan Paul has successfully moved to the company, appearing at Wrestlemania this week.

While several MMA stars have joined WWE with some success, most notably Brock Lesnar and Ronda Rousey.

McGregor has been out of practice in the octagon, not winning in the UFC ring for more than three years and not contesting for a title since 2018, when he lost against Khabib Nurmagomedov.

He is currently unranked due to his inactivity, but is set to face fellow veteran Michael Chandler (23-8), currently rated as UFC's No 5-ranked lightweight.
