Broadband TV News: Warner Bros. Discovery sees significant engagement in first two weeks of Max

Story from Broadband TV News:

Warner Bros. Discovery’s rebranded streaming service, Max, has seen significant user engagement in the 11 days since it went live.

In an interview with Wall Street Journal, JB Perrette, President & CEO of Discovery Streaming & International, said 70% of existing HBO Max subscribers in the United States have transitioned to the new Max service, which now includes bundled Discovery+ content. The launch of Max took place on May 23, and Perette told the Journal this exceeds expectations.

Perrette added that the remaining 30% of HBO Max subscribers who have yet to switch to Max will continue to be paying subscribers. Users are prompted to join Max when they access their existing HBO Max accounts. However, Perrette noted that Discovery+, its sister streaming service, experienced a loss of subscribers, although specific figures were not disclosed. Warner Bros. Discovery does not typically provide separate subscriber numbers for its streaming services.

Approximately 20% of the content consumed by Max subscribers comes from Discovery+.

Max subscribers now have access to a vast library of content, totalling 35,000 hours. This includes popular HBO shows such as Succession, White Lotus, Euphoria and House of the Dragon along with Discovery+ titles like Fixer Upper, 90 Day Fiancé, and Dr Pimple Popper.

As of the first quarter of 2023, Warner Bros. Discovery reported a total of 97.6 million global subscribers across HBO, HBO Max, and Discovery+ combined.
