Broadband TV News: Netflix to stream celebrity golf tournament

Story from Broadband TV News:

Netflix is making a tentative entry into the world of sports with plans to stream a celebrity golf tournament with professional golfers and Formula One drivers.

The Wall Street Journal reported Netflix was in talks to cover the event that would be staged in Las Vegas and feature personalities from its Drive to Survive docuseries and Full Swing, a programme that followed golfers on the professional tour.

To date, Netflix has stayed away from streaming live sports, while rivals Apple TV+ and Amazon Prime Video have bought their way into the market in a bid to open up to new subscribers.

Apple has the rights to Major League Baseball, while Amazon has shown Champions League, ATP Tennis and Premier League Football.

Netflix bid for US rights to Formula 1 but was outbid by the Disney-owned ESPN.

Earlier this year, Comedian Chris became the first artist to perform live on Netflix in a live-streamed comedy special. However, technical difficulties with a live reunion episode of dating show Love is Blind led to an apology and a recorded episode that was screened the next day.
